5Rhythms Reach Out (5RRO)
12 January 2011, 22:27 / Filed in: News
Dear 5Rhythms dancers, friends and family,
I have just returned from a very inspiring time in New York, dancing with Gabrielle Roth and 50 other teachers. It was so wonderful to spend the time in that field of energy, with our shared passion for the dance and the places it takes us, in our own lives and in the lives of those that we touch through our work.
Gabrielle spoke about 5RRO - the project that she has devoted her energy to these last few years. Last year, whilst she was responding to her cancer diagnosis, she succeeded in bringing 5RRO from vision to reality. Quite an accomplishment and reflects the commitment she has to make sure that this practice reaches beyond the 'workshop circuit' to the lives of those less privileged than most, if not all, of us reading this email.
To listen to Gabrielle speak personally about 5Rhythms Reach Out and to find out more about the work being offered in prisons, with cancer patients, children and elders in various parts of the world then please follow this link: http://mim.io/b3e57?fe=1&pact=2357297670
Many of you will know that I was first introduced to 5Rhythms in 1988 by Leo Rutherford and Nick Twilley (before there were 5Rhythms teachers as such), whilst on my training to become a Movement and Drama Therapist. Being in the position of offering movement to people with Special Needs, with Autism, people in Psychiatric Hospitals always felt like an extraordinary responsibility. I was exposed at quite a young age to the magic that the non-verbal could bring to peoples lives, those deemed as 'less' and all cross sections of society. I have never looked back. This has been my vocation for the past 20+ years and I continually feel gratitude for the work I feel so blessed to offer.
Gabrielle's' devotion to 5RRO inspires me to look sideways in my own teaching work about where and how I can expand what I offer. There are so many ways in which people of all ages and situations are considered 'less' despite the richness they have to offer. Recently, in Thailand, I received some massages by women at Lila Thai Massage Shop - http://www.chiangmaithaimassage.com/index.php?name=news&file=readnews&id=8. These are all women who have been in prison and as part of their rehabilitation into society have been trained in giving massage. My personal commitment, that 5RRO will be able to help me realise, with the support of people like you, is to find a way to offer 5Rhythms to these women.I have a mission :-) Please help me fulfil it.
The foundations are being laid for great opportunities. To enable Gabrielle's dream to be realised, and those of many others, investment is needed. At this stage, all money received is going towards setting up the infrastructure of this non-profit organisation. Money is energy and to keep the flow of good intention moving, all donations, from £1/$1 to whatever currency you operate with, would be much appreciated and can make a considerable difference in the lives of people who might not otherwise have an opportunity to dance, express, feel and heal in this way.
Quite simply, if your life has been beneficially touched by this 5Rhythms practice (which might be indirectly through knowing me), then please do consider donating something to 5RRO. I highly recommend checking out the website link above, you can also go directly to http://www.5rro.org/donations
Please pass this onto anyone who you think might be interested in supporting 5RRO. Thank you.
Thank you for reading this,
from my heart

5R Update
Dear all,
hello from a wild and windy Geneva - makes me feel right at home.
I have just finished teaching a wonderful workshop here - over half of the 35 people were new to 5Rhythms and it was so inspiring to see how deep we could go when just dancing 'the basics'....
On to Bangkok tomorrow - that will be a change!
In the meantime, for Moray folk, Hamid will be teaching a class on Wednesday night, 7.30-9.30pm £5 in the Dance Studio, downstairs in the Universal Hall.
Also, for the women out there, I am excited that Julie Deal will be back in Findhorn at the end of November. We will be offering a Secret Garden appetiser! Saturday 27th November 2-6pm Cluny Ballroom, Dinner for those that wish at my place, The Cottage, Station House, followed by sauna and massage. You can come just for the afternoon or the whole thing. More details on how to book to follow.
enjoy

Ongoing Group in Geneva
Dear all,
I am very happy to announce that my first ever Ongoing Group will be taking place in Geneva next year. Quite why Geneva is beyond me ~ maybe it is because the United Nations are there, maybe it is the lake with the Alps all around, maybe the fantastic Bains Des Paquis, the public sauna, steam, Hammam plunge-in-the lake-in-winter or sunbathe-and-swim-in-the-summer, haven I have visited both times I have taught there this year!
When I taught in Geneva in April, half the people in the room had danced with me in Findhorn. This time, we had a tea and chat for all those wanting to know about the Foundation and Community. It is this interest in Findhorn, that is integral in my teaching, that also brings me to Geneva.
I was first invited to Geneva by Sam and Sabrina MacDuff, friends from Findhorn (who met on a workshop I taught there). Now my work there is being ably organised by Adela Bevan, who has also danced with me in Findhorn and Guilliaume will be translating for me. A wonderful team has evolved to support the development of my teaching there. There is a shared feeling of appreciation and excitement in the air... Kat Forrester, long time organiser for Movement Medicine and 5Rhythms workshops wrote to Adela and I after this weekend "Deborah’s way of teaching resonates profoundly in my soul; I repeat: Geneva is very lucky to have this happening, thanks to you both for being willing to stretch yourselves out to provide it."
So if my teaching also resonates in your soul (thanks Kat, that's beautiful), if the idea of travelling through 2011 with a committed group of people attracts you; to engage deeply, vulnerably and excitedly with all that is available to us - then please contact Adela soon as places are limited: Adela Bevan adelamaryann@hotmail.com.
You are welcome to join us there wherever you live - if you live outside of Geneva, we have some lovely offers from people happy to host dancers.
with much love and autumnal wishes to you, near and far,
Deborah

5R Update - a long one
Dear all,
And a soggy return to Findhorn it is.
It was so lovely to teach a class in London; there were people there who have danced with me here in Findhorn, in Greece recently, 13 years ago when I was pregnant with Kezia. I danced at someone else's class on Monday night and at the end the teacher Sarah said the first class she went to 12 years ago was with me and thanked me - it was strange and warm to feel so at home, away from home, in the area I grew up in. I am still a North London girl even if I adore this land and the Bay of Findhorn.
Various people have asked me about the Thursday classes. In case you didn't get the email I sent in June, I decided to take a break this term from teaching them. I was tired and needing the space to feel into where my passion for this work honestly lies. What I have discovered so far is not so surprising to me; that my great love is to work deeply and intimately with people. What does this look like?

Findhorn Update 30 June 2010
Dear dancing people,
Firstly, thank you so much to all the people who have replied to the letter I sent out about taking a break from the Thursday evening class. I have loved hearing from those I see every week and those I might rarely see but are still connected in. I am sorry I haven't had a chance to reply to each of you individually. Secondly, I am not going anywhere (well apart from Geneva and Thailand...)!
I have had heart warming wishes that I enjoy my time out, panic about will there be any chance to still dance 5Rhythms here in Findhorn - it is just the Thursday class that is taking a break. I will still be working, offering Individual Sessions, 3 day Retreats, SYP - along with Bettina, and more sporadic one-off daytime sessions, at weekends and maybe something during the week -I am not sure yet and am taking the luxury of not knowing!
In the meantime this Sunday is an extra long SYP 7-9pm with Sarena from Edinburgh who is sharing the music with DJ Monkey Magic. I am sorry to miss it. Enjoy! Sarena has been practicing 5Rhythms dance for 10 years; she is an accredited teacher with Gabrielle Roth and teaching regular classes in Edinburgh; she is currently studying Process Oriented Psychology.
Various other SYP are happening over the next couple of months, the week long in August, Belladrum music festival and Saturday 4th September 2-5pm.
With love and appreciation,
Deborah
