5R Update
26 October 2010, 15:46
Dear all,
hello from a wild and windy Geneva - makes me feel right at home.
I have just finished teaching a wonderful workshop here - over half of the 35 people were new to 5Rhythms and it was so inspiring to see how deep we could go when just dancing 'the basics'....
On to Bangkok tomorrow - that will be a change!
In the meantime, for Moray folk, Hamid will be teaching a class on Wednesday night, 7.30-9.30pm £5 in the Dance Studio, downstairs in the Universal Hall.
Also, for the women out there, I am excited that Julie Deal will be back in Findhorn at the end of November. We will be offering a Secret Garden appetiser! Saturday 27th November 2-6pm Cluny Ballroom, Dinner for those that wish at my place, The Cottage, Station House, followed by sauna and massage. You can come just for the afternoon or the whole thing. More details on how to book to follow.
enjoy
with love

5R Update - a long one
24 September 2010, 02:28
Dear all,
And a soggy return to Findhorn it is.
It was so lovely to teach a class in London; there were people there who have danced with me here in Findhorn, in Greece recently, 13 years ago when I was pregnant with Kezia. I danced at someone else's class on Monday night and at the end the teacher Sarah said the first class she went to 12 years ago was with me and thanked me - it was strange and warm to feel so at home, away from home, in the area I grew up in. I am still a North London girl even if I adore this land and the Bay of Findhorn.
Various people have asked me about the Thursday classes. In case you didn't get the email I sent in June, I decided to take a break this term from teaching them. I was tired and needing the space to feel into where my passion for this work honestly lies. What I have discovered so far is not so surprising to me; that my great love is to work deeply and intimately with people. What does this look like?

Findhorn Update 30 June 2010
30 June 2010, 18:39
Dear dancing people,
Firstly, thank you so much to all the people who have replied to the letter I sent out about taking a break from the Thursday evening class. I have loved hearing from those I see every week and those I might rarely see but are still connected in. I am sorry I haven't had a chance to reply to each of you individually. Secondly, I am not going anywhere (well apart from Geneva and Thailand...)!
I have had heart warming wishes that I enjoy my time out, panic about will there be any chance to still dance 5Rhythms here in Findhorn - it is just the Thursday class that is taking a break. I will still be working, offering Individual Sessions, 3 day Retreats, SYP - along with Bettina, and more sporadic one-off daytime sessions, at weekends and maybe something during the week -I am not sure yet and am taking the luxury of not knowing!
In the meantime this Sunday is an extra long SYP 7-9pm with Sarena from Edinburgh who is sharing the music with DJ Monkey Magic. I am sorry to miss it. Enjoy! Sarena has been practicing 5Rhythms dance for 10 years; she is an accredited teacher with Gabrielle Roth and teaching regular classes in Edinburgh; she is currently studying Process Oriented Psychology.
Various other SYP are happening over the next couple of months, the week long in August, Belladrum music festival and Saturday 4th September 2-5pm.
With love and appreciation,
Deborah

5R Update 14 June 2010
14 June 2010, 17:40
Dear all,
Attached is the Summer Calendar [PDF opens in new window]. As you will see, there are 2 more Thursday classes before the summer break, quite a few SYP over the summer and a couple of Intro Wednesdays, including the open session during the week long dance event. Some of this is in The Park and some in Cluny, Forres. It is all on the website if you forget - or on this calendar which you can keep, print out, or look at posted around the Park.
I hope it is clear enough. There are a few dates still uncertain (depending on the Nairn jazz festival) so i have left them out and if they happen, in August, will email separately.
I am teaching some, Bettina is teaching a few SYP and Sarena Wolfaard from Edinburgh with be holding a SYP in the beginning of July. Enjoy!
I am in a review process about the weekly classes and will send a separate email about that as soon as I have had the time to write it!
Up and coming workshops 2010/11:
There are other things brewing; Retreats for Individuals, a weekend in Sheffield, an on-going group in Geneva, Secret Garden parties in Edinburgh, London and Bristol (and Paris??) and more. My Angel of Openness for the year is having a field day playing with my terror of the unknown and the excitement that comes when new things happen.
Keep in touch :)

Findhorn Update 3 March 2010

Bright sun shine and cold fresh air - yes, soak it up.
Deepening Waves class tomorrow night and 'Delicious' on Friday night 8pm in the Universal Hall. This is in honour of International Women's day. 10% of the profits are going to a local womens' refuge. Please come and enjoy and support the night. No previous experience of 5Rhythms is required.
I was asked a good question about Friday night and the 'men in frocks' bit. Who is this for? All women and all men are welcome - men who love to dance with a dress/skirt kilt on cos it feels great, men who cross dress, are transgender, exploring their inner feminine, like dressing up just for the fun of it. Men who do this regularly or who never do but have always wanted to... all welcome. Some frocks will be available on the door....
We have well over 20 women attending the Secret Garden and have room for 4 or 5 more. If you want to take part please email Liz in the BSS office and give her your deposit! admin@bodysurfscotland.co.uk

5R Update 17 February 2010
17 February 2010, 16:59
Dear all,
Is it Winter or Spring? Can't quite tell. I think it's both; the need to rest and brew still strong and at the same time bird song and light calling new ideas forward up from dark hidden spaces. I find this an exciting time. I thoroughly enjoyed teaching a class in Greenwich, London on Saturday morning. 30 people, most of whom I'd never met. At least one of them is probably coming up to take part in 'Secret Garden' in just over 2 weeks - so many people still wanting to come visit here who have never been. It fascinates me that different workshops for different people are the trigger for someone to go " OK, Now I will go to Findhorn". (Read More...)

Findhorn Update 3 February 2010
04 February 2010, 00:07
Hi all,
'Replenish' happened and it was a delicious, still-flow, dancing delight. It was great to have some new faces as well as regulars for the 3 days. It may well become a regular event. Thank you to Elliott, Monica & Margo (S&PD) and Hanna & Dave (U.Hall) for supporting it happening as well as participating.
The simple news is;
Deepening Waves class tomorrow night Thursday 4th 7.30-9.30pm
Sweat Your Prayers Sunday 7th 7-8.30pm with Bettina
There will be two people on the door tomorrow night hopefully, to ease the new price increase and bundle cards into effect. Please note:

29 January 2010, 18:28
Dear all,
Firstly a reminder about the Replenish 3 day event starting tomorrow. We are almost full so if you are wanting to join this eclectic wonderful group that has evolved please email Monica today.
A small intimate group danced last night. People showing up who haven't been to class for months. I love how large and varied the pool of 5R dancers is. Deepening Waves is next Thursday 4th Feb and Bettina is holding the SYP on Sunday 7th February.
Info on the Women's workshop 5-7th March. The Goddess & the Whore was going to be Women's Circle. Julie (Deal) and I were not happy with this title and have had some wonderful conversations about what we are actually offering. Clarity arrived and the fliers for 'Secret Garden - a weekend for women to nurture and celebrate our sacred sexuality' will be out next week. Thank you for your patience to those that have been asking for months how to book.

Findhorn Update 14 January 2010
14 January 2010, 20:25
Hello all,
a reminder that the Thursday Deepening Waves classes start again tonight. Looking forward to seeing you then.
The new price increase will begin in 3 weeks, giving time for dialogue/feedback to occur: £10 flat fee per class, £8 NFA and £7 concessions (OAP, students/unemployed). Your friendly door people will be exercising their Staccato muscles for those of you who ask to pay concessions. In addition, I am offering a payment card: pay for 10 classes and you get 2 free. This will, I hope, soften the price increase from £6 to £8 for many of you . It is also intended to encourage commitment to classes – your practice and classes really benefit from regular attendance, which I appreciate as well. The payment card will probably be kept on the door – to be discussed with the door crew! They will be valid for 6 months from date of purchase. Please note, that while the NFA price is £8 which is what most of you would be due to pay (if you are NFA members...); if you buy 12 classes for the price of 10 that works out at £6.66 per class which is only an increase of 66p from what most of you were paying.
Conversations will no doubt continue, in the meantime please do take advantage of the following: Replenish: 30 January 30 - 1 February 2010. AND I am very excited to be teaching a week in Greece, 2-9th July, at Jock’s Centre in Kalikalos. I met Jock during my experience week in 1986 when he did my nature sharing. It was really due to him that my life changed about so much as I ended up staying on (instead of leaving on the saturday) to help out in the Apothecary (where the Visitors Centre is now) for the next 3 months and on and off over the next couple of years. So i am pleased to be able to now offer 5Rhythms at what sounds like such a lovely place - I have never been to Greece and it has been on my wish list for a long time. Please check out the flier to book. The earlier you book the cheaper the travel and there is a 5% discount if you pay in full before 90 days (April 2nd approx).
With love,
Deborah

News from Singapore (+Findhorn update!)
27 November 2009, 12:48
Dear all,
Hello from Singapore!
Well, here I am on the last leg of my extraordinary journey. I just spent 3 days travelling by train from Northern Thailand to Singapore. I jiggled and rumbled, read and listened to music and stared out the window for hours. I loved it. I am now gearing up for more than the slight adjustment I will need to make to the weather when I get back next week. (Read More...)

News from Bangkok
14 November 2009, 14:15
I write to you from Bangkok to remind you all that Martin is teaching another SYP in CLUNY BALLROOM this Sunday 15th November at 7.00-8.30pm as usual.
It is so hot and humid here - a welcome change from my usual November weather! teaching today was harder than I expected. Very loud air-conditioning, poor acoustics, getting the hang of teaching in Bangkok chaos which is very different than the more ordered way in Japan. We did great. I am completely at the mercy of wonderful translators for every word I say and keep needing to change the way i teach - use my body more to demonstrate which is great. (Read More...)

Findhorn Update 17 October 2009
21 October 2009, 20:06
Dear all,
I am counting down and gearing up for my travels away. What a blessing to have the beauty of these Autumn days here - knowing I am heading into the colourful Autumnal days of turning leaves in Japan. I am teaching Stillness this morning with the ongoing group 'Body~Breath~Beat'. Delicious. Tomorrow night, Sunday 18th October is a Sweat Your Prayers in the Auditorium. £5 7pm start, come early for time to get changed and warm up.
Thursday 22nd is the last Thursday class until December 3rd. I am teaching a benefit class that is open to all, count it as an Intro and bring your friends. I am fundraising for some of the work I will be doing in Thailand with children from poor backgrounds, about 70% from broken families. 60 students with 15 teachers! They want to learn 5R to gain self-confidence, self-healing and if possible a group of them will continue dancing and form a dancing club in the school. This is a school of a local municipality. Pracha and his colleagues are responsible for complimentary learning for this class to set an example of alternative learning process for the whole school and the whole municipality.Pracha will be at the class on Thursday and will speak at the beginning about the project - all money raised will help fund this work.
Alice Fryer is my Admin Angel and is organising a number of Sweat Your Prayers on Sunday evenings during November; taught by Martin Julich a 5R teacher from Aberdeen and Bettina. Notices will be in the RB. NO THURSDAY CLASSES IN NOVEMBER.
A calendar will be emailed out in the next few days along with a poster for Martin's workshop on 8th November. Basic details are:
Going Within
A 5 Rhythms workshop exploring surrendering ourselves into the being just here, as we are.
10am-1pm – Sunday 8th November 2009 - Dance Drama Studio, The Universal Hall, The Park, Findhorn
This workshop is an invitation to take time to go within through the dance. Following the inner feeling, playing with the ground, grounding, Earth element - all but words waiting to be filled with your experience.
Price: £15 if booked in advance / £20 on the door
Contact: alice.findhorn@googlemail.com for more information
Martin Julich MRSS(T) Dip CHM has been exploring Movement Practice through 5 Rhythms, Yoga and Qigong for the last 15-20 years. He is a qualified 5R teacher and registered Shiatsu practitioner based in Aberdeen.

Update 11 August 2009
11 August 2009, 19:03
Dear all,
a quiet Tuesday evening and I am gearing up for a full few weeks of teaching. I shall detail it all below. I am glad to be teaching, immersing myself in the music, movement and breath of this practice that I love. I am feeling deeply touched by the news that Gabrielle Roth has recently been diagnosed with lung cancer. There are no details for the mind to grasp onto, just an apparently massive facebook page and a lot of prayers and healing wishes winging their way from all over the globe to her, her husband Robert and son Jonathan. All workshops and trainings are continuing with others stepping in and up to the challenge and call. Nothing is really changing and yet my insides are affected; Gabrielle and this path have been at the core of my spiritual jouney for the past 22 years - the year after I came to Findhorn. There is though only one practice as ever; to keep dancing, breathing, offering and surrendering. Shaky ground indeed - so lets keep grounding into our beings, focusing our intentions and letting our hearts melt and souls soar as we learn how to journey through this unpredictable terrain called life. Where and when below:
More to follow but that's enough for the next couple of weeks!
love,
Deborah
a quiet Tuesday evening and I am gearing up for a full few weeks of teaching.
- Wednesday 12th August: Waves Introduction, Cluny HIll College, 7.45-9.30pm £5
- Saturday 15th august: WaveRave, Universal Hall 8-10.30pm £15/£8
- Saturday 15th-22nd August FF Waves week long workshop, a few places still available Contact bookings@findhorn.org if you want to take part.
- Wednesday 19th August open session in the Waves week, 7.30-9.30pm fundraising for "Art group for girls' - see attached document for more info. Suggested minimum donation £5.
- Sunday 23rd August Sweat Your Prayers, Universal Hall, 7-8.30pm £5
- Friday 28th - Sunday 30th August: Waves and Heart2Heart in Edinburgh. Contact Sarena: move2bestill@yahoo.co.uk to book. Places are filling up nicely.
More to follow but that's enough for the next couple of weeks!
love,
Deborah
(Mega) Update 28 July 2009
29 July 2009, 00:00
Dear all,
A fabulous Sweat was danced on Sunday night, if a slightly manic one.
We all survived. :)
There is a Deepening Waves class this Thursday 30th July. 7.30pm in the Auditorium. For various reasons it is the last one for about a month, so hope to see you there.
There are a few One-off Sessions coming up that are ALL suitable for people who haven't danced the Wave before, or want to remind themselves of the basics of the practice. Spread the word, tell your friends etc!
We have a good group forming for this years FF Waves week. Adele Napier is co-focalising with me this year which is a new treat. There are still places available, reduced price for NFA members. Apply for a bursary soon if you are needing that to attend. I will be focusing on opening our dances to all the directions more this year, using all the space, behind, in front, to the side, above, below and within. So many dances tend to be front on only, lets use all the directions to expand our dances on different levels. Dancing every day, dropping deeper is unavoidable :).
Contact bookings@findhorn.org to book.
The early bird discount for the Edinburgh Heartbeat weekend is up on August 1st. Please send the full payment of £95 to Sarena (Cheques to: S Wolfaard, Address: 20 Braehead Drive, Linlithgow, EH49 6EG) for the Friday Waves and Heart2Heart weekend instead of £110. (Details here)
I am offering another Ongoing group beginning September 5th and ending October 24th, just before I go away for 5 weeks to teach in Japan and Thailand. I have had the dates for ages but haven't emailed them out as I can't decide on the theme! Now time is drawing near. So here are the dates and cost and send me ideas for the theme! Previous Ongoing groups have been “Heartbeat” or the Spring one “Me, Myself & I” about relationship though the dance. I could offer either of these again or?? I have taught 3 ongoing groups now, with a number of people choosing to return. While the theme is important, most people particularly comment in the feedback about the importance and value of dancing with the same group of people over 7 sessions, as well as the individual session which is included in the price.
Dates: September Saturday 5th and 12th, Sunday 20th, Saturday 26th - 10.30-1pm, October Saturday 10th, 17th and 24th - 10.30am -1pm. Venue: DDS, Universal Hall. Cost: Same as Spring £155 - £100, including a 1:1 session with me. 10% discount to previous participants of one of my ongoing groups. 2 bursary places available, please enquire. Places are limited. To confirm your booking please give a £50 non-refundable deposit to ‘Deborah Jay-Lewin’. Balance of payment due on the first session. For further info call 07968 145428 or email us.
That's it!
Thanks for reading, dancing and all the ways we keep showing up,
love

Hi all,
sun and rain, wind and rainbows – all mirrors of our internal landscape.
If you want to spend time investigating your internal landscape through dance then come along to the Heart2Heart weekend this Saturday and Sunday. There are still a few places left, with dancers coming from London, Edinburgh, Ireland as well as local. Please contact Monica: monica.boeni@findhorn.org if you wish to book. A deposit of £25 is needed to confirm your place.
Deepening Waves class this Thursday 28th is in the Auditorium, 7.30-9.30pm. Over the next 6 weeks Geash Bowler is visiting. Lucky us. Having completed the Teacher Training with Gabrielle Roth last October she will be teaching some of the classes. next Thursday 4th June is the first one.
The WaveRave is happening this Saturday with myself and DJ Monkey Magic – a high energy, funky music night to dance with others.
See you somewhere soon no doubt.
Love
Deborah
PS: Yes, Bettina and Iain now have an apparently gorgeous baby girl called Isabella. Welcome :-)

Dear all,
Firstly thank you for the phenomenal response to my email asking for feedback. 30 people have replied with a range of responses that have been very insightful and useful to read for Bettina and myself. I can say the Dance Studio is certainly not some peoples favourite place to be! Whilst some have also grown to love and appreciate the holding and intimacy it offers.
Goddess & the Whore was a huge success. 13 women gathered at Newbold and have emerged nourished and juicer I would say :) Having taken part 3 years running now, I realise that a workshop is the wrong word to describe it, it is more a life-changing and enhancing event. Blessed am I.

I Need to Be Dancing...
05 February 2009, 23:58
[...] It has been an interesting time to be moving down to the smaller space of the Dance Studio while the Auditorium floor gets sanded. The physical space to move in has shrunk at the same time as the general word and experience around is about shrinking finances. Someone turned up to dance last week, and chose not to come in, concerned about lack of space in the Dance Studio - there were 15 people. It prompted quite a strong response in me. I set the challenge to myself and us all: in these turning, unravelling times surely the priority has to be, for those of us on this path, not Where is the class? Who is teaching? Will I like the music? Will there be enough people or too many people? The question seems to me to be "DO I WANT TO DANCE?" and maybe even the WANT is irrelevant - quite simply - I NEED TO BE DANCING. (Read More...)

Dear 5Rhythms dancers,
Here is some more information about what is happening in the Community over the next wee while. As a reminder, due to the floor being sanded in the Auditorium (and the new film screen and equipment being installed) we have some changes of venue as there are also events happening in Cluny. So we dance between Cluny Ballroom and the Dance studio. Don't worry about space, there is always the magic of the art of circulation, with the breath in the body and the body in the room. I know myself the myriad of excuses I can come up with NOT to dance and.... I have never regretted showing up in over 20 years of this practice being in my life. (Read More...)

Happy New Year to you all from the Big apple!
Yes, here I am having a nourishing and inspiring time with Gabrielle and 45 other teachers. Going over some basics in teaching material and also studying 'Mirrors" work - that is the work of the ego and the many guises it shows up in, specifically in teaching but of course in all our relationships. I feel lucky, privileged, grateful etc.
The New Years Event was a wonderful success - one of the best ever. A slightly mad, 'random' open session that some people loved and some detested...... but engaged us all in the dance in a different way which I think is always beneficial!
I am doing my absolute best to get venues for classes confirmed for this term. Due to the floor in the auditorium being sanded and workshops in Cluny we will be moving about... (Read More...)

Hello this beautiful cold, bright morning,
The last few classes of 2008 are occurring in the next week. Thank you all for your ongoing presence, engagement, commitment and passion for showing up; for yourself and the dance, here in this fantastic group of dancers. It has been a rich year of study and work for me. As I finish teaching the second ongoing Heart2Heart group, I am very grateful for the Heartbeat training I was able to take part in with Gabrielle Roth. These ongoing groups have been so rewarding; meeting week after week with the same group of people, and the individual sessions that each person receives, touches me deeply. These are challenging times and this work can be profound in what it offers. I will be sending out the dates for my next ongoing course soon. (Read More...)

New Year's Event 2008/2009
20 November 2008, 01:19
I love the Bodysurf Scotland New Years Event which is why I am excited about teaching on it again. This year, having had a year off, we are trying something different. Karl and I have invited Robert Anderson, an old friend of ours from London who teaches Contact Improvisation in London and all over to join us. With a mix of 5R and CI sessions, time off to relax in the hot tub and walk on the beach, two open sessions for those who can't or don't want to participate in the whole thing, dinner in the Community Centre each day so we get to share food, local and far away dancers (inc. Japan and Ireland so far!), a fabulous Hogmanay Ceilidh and party, this promises to be a wonderful 5 days. (Read More...)

Dear all,
On the Downloads page is a poster advertising the a fabulous evening heading your way a week Saturday: A WaveRave with DJ Monkey Magic and myself. Please do email it to anyone you think may be interested, even if they haven't danced the Rhythms before. After the Body Parts warm up I will give a short intro for any newcomers to the practice. Thanks.
Also, next Thursday 6th November, Sarena Wolfaard, a 5Rhythms teacher from Edinburgh is going to come teach the class. We bumped into each other at a 5R class in London- and decided to do a swap. She is coming here next week and I am going to teach her class down there on Sunday 7th December and then whizz back for the SYP that night. To read Sarena's bio go to click on Teachers at http://www.5rhythms-scotland.com.
All love

Hello on this beautiful Autumn day.
I am actually writing this on a plane - I hope I find a WiFi signal on land soon. I am away again for a couple of weeks now, a mixture of work in Barcelona and holidays. I hope the colour of the leaves in this exquisite time of year helps us all to keep awake to magic and to appreciate the beauty of impermanence.
